چکیده

The performance of music usually involves a great deal of interpretation by the musician. In classical music, the final ritardando is a good example of the expressive aspect of music performance. Even though expressive timing data is expected to have a strong component that is determined by the piece itself, in this paper we investigate to what degree individual performance style has an effect on the timing of final ritardandi. The particular approach taken here uses Friberg and Sundberg’s kinematic rubato model in order to characterize performed ritardandi. Using a machinelearning classifier, we carry out a pianist identification task to assess the suitability of the data for characterizing the individual playing style of pianists. The results indicate that in spite of an extremely reduced data representation, when cancelling the piece-specific aspects, pianists can often be identified with accuracy above baseline. This fact suggests the existence of a performer-specific style of playing ritardandi.

Chopin’s Struggle with Identity and his Nocturne in G Minor

Oftentimes, when one asks about the most famous Polish figure, people’s first response would easily be “Chopin.” Indeed, to many, he is the symbol for Polish nationalism. Exiled in Paris during the Russian incursion on his home soil during the 1830s, Chopin composed a large body of work that is closely related to his Polish roots: 58 mazurkas and 18 polonaises, among the more than 200 pieces he...

The Magaloff Project: An Interim Report

One of the main difficulties in studying expression in musical performance is the acquisition of data. While audio recordings abound, automatically extracting precise information related to timing, dynamics, and articulation is still not possible at the level of precision required for large-scale music performance studies. In 1989, the Russian pianist Nikita Magaloff performed essentially the e...

Chopin ’ s Nocturnes and Entropy

It is an oft-quoted fact that there is much in common between the fields of music and mathematics. This paper seeks to examine that commonality through the use of information theory techniques, specifically, entropy as defined by Shannon. The analysis will be presented through the process of creating an entropy table for a collection of Chopin’s Nocturnes. The method for generating a random str...

YQX Plays Chopin

A computer program is to play two piano pieces that it has never seen before in an “expressive” way (that is, by shaping tempo, timing, dynamics, and articulation in such a way that the performances sound “musical” or “human”). The two pieces were composed specifically for the occasion by Professor N.N. One is in the style of nocturnes by Frederic Chopin, the other is in a style resembling Moza...

Music Performer Verification Based on Learning Ensembles

In this paper the problem of music performer verification is introduced. Given a certain performance of a musical piece and a set of candidate pianists the task is to examine whether or not a particular pianist is the actual performer. A database of 22 pianists playing pieces by F. Chopin in a computer-controlled piano is used in the presented experiments. An appropriate set of features that ca...
